From 5K to Half Marathon: How to Build Your Base

There’s something magical about running your first 5K—it’s often where the running bug bites. But if you’re like most runners, once you’ve conquered that distance, the next question is, “What’s next?”

For many, it’s the jump to 10K, then the half marathon. But making that leap isn’t just about running further—it’s about running smarter.

Start by Building Your Base

Your base is your foundation—the steady, aerobic fitness that allows you to handle longer distances without injury or burnout.

This stage isn’t about speed. It’s about time on your feet, consistent mileage, and gradually increasing your capacity.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Running 3–4 days per week

  • Keeping most runs at a conversational pace

  • Slowly increasing weekly mileage (no more than 10% per week)

  • Adding a weekly “long run” that stretches you just a bit more each time

Don’t Forget Strength and Mobility

Distance running puts repetitive stress on your body. A couple of short strength sessions each week—focused on glutes, hamstrings, and core—can drastically reduce your injury risk and improve your form.

Even 20 minutes of bodyweight work or banded exercises can make a difference.

Practice Your Gear and Fuel Early

Longer runs mean more time on your feet—and more logistics to manage. Start testing what you’ll wear, how you’ll fuel, and where you’ll stash everything now.

EverRun belts are built to carry what you need on race day, without getting in the way during training. No bounce. No shifting. Just smooth miles.
